Laboratory Protocol For Skeena Benthic Biomonitoring
The Skeena Region of British Columbia had been involved with benthic biomonitoring for several years. For a variety of reasons the decision was made to switch from the B-IBI (Benthic- Index of Biological Integrity) model to the RCA (Reference Condition Approach). Chris Perrin (Limnotek), Danusia Dolecki (Invertebrates Unlimited) and I crafted a laboratory protocol which preserved some of the valuable elements of the IBI protocol and still met the criteria of the CABIN (RCA) methods.
Invertebrates of Thermal Springs in British Columbia
Between 1999 and 2002 I searched for thermal springs around British Columbia which had had minimal human impact and which had thermally influenced water which could support aquatic invertebrates. Some of these springs already had protected status in Ecological Reserves (Ram Creek) or Provincial Parks (Liard Hotsprings Provincial Park). This was the first time that the invertebrates of these thermal springs had been documented in a quantitative and qualitative way. Several new locations were found for the Red Listed dragonfly Argia vivida. Thanks to Habitat Conservation Trust Fund, MEC, and Ministry of Parks for support.
